Grantham Town 2 v 3 Claytons
Not the weather for easy control. A very blustery breeze and a slight touch of rain made for a difficult environment. This game started very well once we had settled in, and our new players started to show their promise. A goal in the first half from Eleanor Pike; a result of some excellent forward play between Eleanor, Annie Walton and Akvile Gerbenyte gave us the lead until partway through the second half, when Claytons scored with a powerful volley from outside the box. Grantham then pressed for another goal, but were undone by a glancing header from a corner. They were soon trailing by two when the ball rolled into the net just out of reach of the sprawling Poppy Hallam. Grantham picked themselves up and changed things around slightly after Hannah Dunderdale had been given a few warnings by the referee for some clumsy challenges, bringing on Jessie-Leigh Slater and shortly after, Katie Bilton; for Hannah and Belinda Jackson. Annie Walton dropped back into defence where she was a revelation, getting onto the end of everything. Grantham pressed on again and found a deserved second goal from Akvile Gerbenyte after going close on two or three occasions. We had another ten minutes to find the equaliser, but didn't quite get there. Very impressive team spirit and a good game by both sides.
