At last a Matchday to remember! This was a brilliant result - the first win of the season and done so emphatically!
It was cold and the ground had barely thawed in the goal areas!
After agreeing to press ahead with the game with the Wyberton Manager, we rolled up our sleeves and got stuck in.
The first goal came after great persistence from Akvile Gerbenyte after earlier attempts were saved by the busy Wyberton Goalkeeper from both Akvile and an industrious Eleanor Pike. Both players had had plenty of shots at goal, some on target and others not so accurate.
It wasn’t too long though before Akvile had another great shot which was a result of an excellent build up, which included terrific running from Abbie Weatherstone on the right wing and passing with Eleanor and Akvile. The shot was saved but the rebound fell to Abbie who was in a brilliant position to deftly put the ball past the keeper for her first of the season.
Again, more industry in the second half from Abbie Weatherstone, who seemed to be getting into a groove. She was alongside Akvile and Eleanor up front as well as back helping out in defence.
Both Eleanor and Akvile had taken slight knocks in the first half, but were running on adrenaline anyway.
Akvile scored yet another goal after some more great Grantham pressure.
Everyone was playing well, and although Wyberton were pressing themselves, it was Akvile who managed another goal (from one of the many balls punted through to her), to get her hat- trick. She again showed all of her strength and skill on the ball and finished off with a simple flick over the diving Goalkeeper, who had made some excellent saves throughout to keep the score down (possibly the other teams best player).
A very good result for the defence who worked tirelessly to clear their lines with only a couple of chances going to the other teams’ forward players who fortunately blazed their shots over the bar.
Well done to everyone.
“Player-of the match” award goes to Abbie Weatherstone for her superb running and passing
